Introduction to Planetary Data and the PSA

The discussion will be around the nature of planetary data, and how to find/use them.
Feedback and answers on the future development of planetary data services will be discussed.
At the end, a short demo of the PSA service will be done.

What is planetary data

  • type of data
  • format
    How to discover planetary data
  • internationalisation of data
  • where are the good data
    Where do we go
  • future development of planetary archives
  • needs of planetary data
  • There has been an extensive discussion on PDS/PSA data
  • Discussion on the use of (generic) planetary data in scientific publishing, archiving and data archives in planetary science (several, heterogeneous, e.g. institutional repositories, Zenodo, Figshare, etc.
  • Highlighting the importance of PDS registry (vs. more complex registry of the many data from peer-reviewed papers deposited in repostiories
  • Next session/discussion needs more time
  • need (registry of ) registry of planetary data + need for catalog + tools to retrieve and display the data → We are working on all of it e.g. @PDS @VESPA
  • if any error is found on PDS/PSA → Please contact PDS/PSA node and/or PI (if still alive)

How do archiving authorities (PDS, PSA, etc…) capture the needs and feedback from the user community to improve their services?

For NASA PDS, there are few ways:

  1. You can use this OpenPlanetary forum (http://openplanetary.discourse.group/) for discussion
  2. Or you can submit feedback directly to the PDS: https://pds.nasa.gov/?feedback=true
  3. Or if it applies to a specific tool, feel free to post tickets to the Github repo: https://github.com/NASA-PDS-Incubator/, https://github.com/NASA-PDS/

Per the comment above, we (the PDS) are working on a solution here. But in the meantime, you can try out our “Keyword Search” to track down specific data sets (PDS: Keyword Search) or our “Data Search” to find more refined/advanced product-level searches (PDS: Data Search). You can also find other search tools (along with other PDS and community contributed tools) at PDS: Tool Registry .

They Keyword Search also has a JSON response you could access programatically, e.g. (https://pds.nasa.gov/services/search/search?wt=json&q=investigation:insight).
